BROOKFIELD
SENIOR CITIZENS
Seniors honor vets, elect new slate
By Bertha
Nolan
On Tuesday, Nov. 1, our members gathered joyfully after a cancelled
meeting in October because of the high water from nine days of
rain. My rain gauge measured 16 inches. The Quaboag River was
across the road on Rte. 148 and Mill Street, and also at North
and South ponds. We have several members who would have been inconvenienced
by detours.
This meeting was our Halloween celebration. A few members wore
orange, and the committee, Shirley Waytina, Mary Kielson, and
Virginia Olds, dressed in costume. Tables were decorated with
silk fall flowers, a pumpkin here and there, and, of course, Halloween
candy. Our Secretary, Marguerite, was aglow in orange; what a
good sport!
At 1:30, President Roland welcomed all and called our meeting
to order. Prayer and Pledge were followed by songs, “Harvest
Moon” and “Put Your Arm Around Me.” Birthdays
and anniversaries for November were announced by Attendance Secretary
Bea, and roll call revealed 41 members present. The Secretary,
Treasurer, Sunshine, Entertainment, and Travel reports were made.
Tickets were being sold for our Rom’s Thanksgiving by Gerry.
President Roland announced the gift certificate from Hannaford
would be awarded at our next meeting. He also said he would provide
the music entertainment for our Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 17
at Rom’s. We have a grant to pay for this.
Chair Lady for Christmas Dinner, Betty B., gave details and the
menu for that upcoming event. Member Chet Leasot announced we
would have a guest speaker at our next meeting, Police Chief Ross
Ackerman. This is open to anyone who may wish to attend. He will
be with us at 2 p.m.
President Roland opened nominations for officers. As no one is
able to take the President at this time, Roland offered to stay
on until spring. The nominations were: Lee Barry – Vice
President, Marguerite Desmond – Secretary, Bea Brodeur –
Attendance, Joe Miner – Treasurer, Shirley Waytina –
Assistant Treasurer. The appointed board members were: Prayer/Sunshine
– Bertha N., Entertainment Lady – Lee Barry, Ticket
Lady – Elizabeth Casucci, Travel Lady – Betty B.,
and 20-club Chair – Al Servant. We will vote on this slate
at our next meeting.
The money raffle and 20-club drawings were held. A 50/50 raffle
was won by “me.” My lucky day! Refreshments and Bingo
were enjoyed.
Tuesday, Nov. 15, was a special day at Wagon Wheel. Today we would
honor all veterans. At 1:30, President Roland welcomed all and
turned the mike over to me for a special program. I gave a military
prayer, followed by the Pledge. Then there was a reading by Marguerite
Desmond, the song “America” by all, a reading by Roland
O’Coin, the song “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” a reading
by Chet Leasot, and a specialty song by Roland, “There’s
a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere.” Our closing song
was “God Bless America.” The hall tables were decorated
in red, white, and blue, and the names of our club veterans were
written on cards across the front of the head table. They are:
Chet Leasot, Mike Zugrovich, George Lemay, Don Renaud, Al Casucci,
Joe Miner, Ed Nichols, Roland O’Coin, Al Servant, and our
only lady veteran, Myra Neely, who was not with us, as she lives
in Connecticut but is still a member. We thank God for all these
veterans who are still active in our club.
Our meeting started with roll call with 42 present, and reports
from the Secretary, Treasurer, Sunshine, Entertainment, and Travel
chairpersons. Ticket Lady Gerry had our Christmas Dinner tickets
for sale. Betty B., Chair Lady for our Christmas Party and Dinner,
gave more details for that day, coming soon, on Dec. 15. How time
flies!
President Roland read the slate of officers for the new year,
2006: President – Roland O’Coin, Vice President –
Lee Barry, Secretary – Marguerite Desmond, Attendance Secretary
– Bea Brodeur, Treasurer – Joe Miner, and Assistant
Treasurer - Shirley Waytina. Appointed officers are: Prayer/Sunshine
– Bertha Nolan, Ticket Lady – Elizabeth Casucci, Entertainment
Lady – Lee Barry, Travel Lady – Betty Baldyga, and
20-club Chairman, Al Servant. All voted in favor of the slate.
Our installation will be in January. President Roland thanked
today’s committee: Marguerite Desmond, Lee Barry and me.
It was fun. He gave thanks for the entertainment participants.
We all thank “Him” for his wonderful music.
The money raffle was held, and the Hannaford Certificate was won
by Millie Miner.
Our guest speaker, Chief Ackerman was unable to keep his appointment
to talk to the club. Perhaps another time.
Refreshments and Bingo were enjoyed.
‘Till next time.
