BROOKFIELD
SENIOR CITIZENS
Seniors reminded
of caregiver services available
By Bertha Nolan
On
Tuesday, June 21, we had two guests to speak before our meeting.
At 1:15, Barbara Harrington, the outreach coordinator for North
and East Brookfield and Brookfield and the Council on Aging, and
Louise Bouchard, the director of the North Brookfield Senior Center,
spoke to us briefly on caregivers’ concerns and issues –
anything where help is needed in the home, or for appointments.
We were reminded to take advantage of the many areas of help that
were available. Barbara said she would be happy to visit us anytime
to give us information. We thank them both.
At 1:35 p.m., President Marge welcomed all and called our meeting
to order. Prayer and Pledge were followed by roll call with 53
members present. Our guests today were Elaine Robinson, daughter
of Al and Jeanne Servant, and Josephine Whighan. The Secretary,
Treasurer, Sunshine, and Entertainment reports were made. Ticket
Lady Gerry had the final count for tickets to our picnic on the
28th – 48 members to attend. Travel Lady Betty reported
on a successful Boston Duck Tour trip and the upcoming Lobster
Bake at Warren’s in Maine for July.
As per request, Marge held a brief discussion on meeting time
change. A vote did not carry, and we will continue to begin meetings
at 1:30 p.m. The Money Raffle was held, and the Victory certificate
was won by Lee Barry.
At this time, President Marge turned the action over to Roland
O’Coin for a short musical program he had planned. Songs
from a spring show we did under the direction of Doris Leasot
were performed. Soloists were Jeanne and Al Servant, Millie Miner,
Pearl Crevier, Marguerite Desmond, Roland and I, with a bit of
comedy, “I’ve got to get rid of that mop and bucket.”
There were harmonica solos by Joe Miner, and several chorus songs.
It was fun! Thanks, Doris, for the memories.
Following refreshments, Bingo was enjoyed.
A
terrific picnic
Tuesday, June 28 at 11:30, members began gathering at
the Brookfield Rod and Gun Club for our Annual Picnic. We enjoyed
background music played by Roland O’Coin on his portable
piano. The weather was humid and showery, but it did not dampen
the atmosphere inside. The club has air conditioning and it was
welcome.
At 12:30, President Marge welcomed all, and I gave the prayer.
Our terrific picnic was catered by Hoo Ya’s of Sturbridge.
Our menu was tossed salad, pasta salad, chips, hot dogs, and hamburgers
with all the fixin’s, coffee and pastries. It was great!!
Kevin Spencer and his helper Russ not only made the meal, but
they helped set up the tables. Kevin is a very successful businessman,
and we were happy to have him. Thanks Kevin and Russ.
Following our meal, more music, a 50/50 drawing won by Madeline
Docwra, door prizes to Helen Sears, Lorraine Buckmaster, Eileen
Lemay, Norman Barry, Virginia Olda, Doris Leasot, and Betty Baldyga,
were enjoyed. For the remainder of the afternoon, the members
played several card games – Pitch, Cribbage, Scat, and Cockroach.
Another memory. Our special thanks to the Rod and Gun Club for
the use of their hall, and the kindness shown to us all.
‘Till next time.
