BROOKFIELD SENIOR CITIZENS
Seniors host candidates, celebrate spring
By Bertha Nolan

On Tuesday, April 14, before our meeting, two candidates for the three-year term of selectman arrived to speak a few words. James Allen and Linda Peirce spoke briefly. A third candidate, Frank Leo, did not visit due to other commitments. At 1:30, President Marge welcomed all, called our meeting to order, and invited out guests to stay. Prayer and Pledge were followed by songs, “Heart of My Heart” and “Side By Side.” Secretary Marguerite gave her report. Treasurer Joe Miner gave a special report on our Easter Dinner, and then his regular report. Sunshine and Entertainment reports were made. Ticket Lady Gerry read the menu for our June Picnic and will have the tickets ready for our next meeting. Travel Lady Betty gave her report. She and President Marge have been looking into details for a requested Mystery Ride. Not enough interest was shown to pursue it further. President Marge announced a guest speaker to visit following the meeting. Maureen Sendrowski for the V.N.A. will speak on drug interactions. She will remain after to answer personal questions. She had been here in October and was invited back. At this time, President Marge announced that she is putting her mobile home up for sale and will be moving to Washington State to live with her daughter.

The Money Raffle was held, and the Victory Certificate was won by Virginia Olds. At 2:10, our speaker arrived and gave a very informative talk on various medications and their effect on each other. It was interesting information we should all know. Thank you, so much. Refreshments and Bingo were enjoyed.

Tuesday, May 3 was a beautiful spring day after a night of rain. Forsythia was in full bloom everywhere, so I couldn’t resist cutting some branches to take with me to Wagon Wheel Hall. I made varied colored, construction paper doilies and put a white vase of the yellow blooms on each table. With May Basket Day of the past on my mind, I made two large baskets to go to lucky winners.

At 1:30, President Marge welcomed all and called our meeting to order. Prayer and Pledge were followed by songs, “Springtime in the Rockies” and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” In Roland’s absence, Millie Miner did the honors at the piano. Thanks, Millie. Roll call revealed 48 members present with one guest, Marilyn Caron; hopefully she will join our club. Birthdays for the month of May were announced. The Secretary, Treasurer, Sunshine and Entertainment reports were made. Ticket Lady Gerry was selling picnic tickets. Travel Lady Betty gave her report.
President Marge had to announcements of interest. The Brookfield Community Club will host a reception for outgoing Selectman Robert Phillips at the Elementary School Library, prior to the Annual Town Meeting, on May 6 from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Also, the Tantasqua Student Council is hosting a Senior Citizen Prom, Thursday, May 12, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The Theme is “Romance in Rome.” It will be a dinner dance. Reservations were to be made by phone. As you read this article, both events have been held; successful and enjoyable.

Next meeting we will celebrate Mother’s Day. The Money Raffle was held, and a 50/50 raffle was won by Marge Van Lare, My two May Baskets were won by Frank Simon and Charlotte Hoogasian. At the meeting’s close, refreshments and Bingo were enjoyed.

I wish to thank all who helped me quickly clean up after refreshments. I was limited for time as I was attending a special event at the Log Cabin in Holyoke at 5:30. Our daughter-in-law, Anne Marie Nolan, was one of many to receive Teacher of the Year Awards for the Western part of Massachusetts. Anne was honored as 1st Grade Teacher of the Year at Stanley Koziel Elementary School in Ware. It was a grand affair, with dinner, entertainment, and the Award Presentation. 141 teachers were honored. I’m one proud “mom.”

-‘Till next time-
