Tantasqua Update: Brookfield girls make Warriors District push
By Bob Schron

The Tantasqua Warriors girls’ basketball team has made a determined push for a Districts’ bid in recent weeks. Coach Tom Goyette, who also teaches physical education at Brookfield Elementary School, has led the Warriors to five wins in six games.

The team’s success has rested on improved inside effort and team balance.

“Our center, Jen Gould, has been a key to our success,” said the coach by phone from Brookfield Elementary. “She’s improved remarkably over the past two years. Her work ethic has made her into one of the best post players in the Southern Worcester County League.”

Gould is now 9th in the league in scoring and in double figures for the first time, at 10 points per game. She averaged 14 during the Warriors’ surge.

Tantasqua’s girls’ basketball program has been buoyed by the Brookfield players Lauren Mina on varsity, Alicia Supernaunt on JV, and middle schoolers Courtney Moen and Ashley Severage. Coach Goyette coaches Lauren at the varsity level.

“Lauren Mina has come off the bench for us, and she’s a critical part of our success,” he said. “She is a super person, and players like her are indispensable to a team’s success.

“She understands her role and has come in and helped us either come back or hold leads while she’s been in there. Her role on the team is important, because it’s created the chemistry that’s been the reason we’ve won five of six games.”

Tantasqua is 6-4 in girls’ basketball.

“The magic number is 10 for a Districts’ bid,” said the coach. “This stretch of good play has given us a legitimate chance of reaching our goal.”

In other sports, the Warriors are 6-2 in boys’ basketball, behind the play of power forward Andrew Kazanoviaz. In indoor track, the Warriors are hoping to repeat last season’s success. The boys’ team is the defending SWCL West title-holder. Best league performances by Warriors are by Kiki Wood in the 2 mile 10:21-3; 300 by Ryan DiGregorio, 37-8, and the team in the 3,200 relay. This season in girls’ track, the Warriors’ Stephanie Kerber has the best performance in the shot put, a distance of 28-10, in the Mile by Cria Picco, the team in the 1,600.

Statistics were obtained through newspaper reports.
