LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Christmas in cold Siberia warmed by local citizens

To the Editor:
Bolshoye Spaceeba! Thank you SO much!

A brother and sister who live at the Yoletchka Children’s home.

Children from the Malutka Babies’ home have their lunch.

Once again, the angels in Brookfield and beyond have come together to make Christmas a bit nicer for some beautiful children half a world away. Socks for Siberia was able to send gifts to the children of the Yoletchka Children’s Home and the Malutka Babies’ home with the help of many wonderful people. It is always heartwarming for us to see the wonderful ways in which our community works to care for these children in Siberia.

A group of talented seamstresses gathered with sewing machines and yards of soft and cozy fleece fabric at the Brookfield Unitarian Universalist Church to create the most wonderful hats and mittens! It was hard to send them off without trying them on first! They also gave us boxes of crayons, books, craft and school supplies.

The girls of Brookfield’s Brownie Troop 487, as part of the “Her Story” badge, put together charming “Baby Bundles” made with comfy flannel baby blankets and filled with such necessities as Pampers, baby wipes, a baby bottle and washcloth. When tied together with a colorful ribbon, these made incredibly thoughtful gifts. These were presented during their pinning ceremony.

The Sunshine Club of Leicester Primary School, for the third year in a row, decided to honor the custodial and office staff by making a generous donation to help with postage, rather than the traditional Christmas gifts usually given. A lovely Leicester resident, who is grandmother of beautiful “chosen children” from the Philippines spent last summer knitting a huge bag of scarves for our dear friends in Abakan, and the teachers and children from Leicester Primary School also collected toys and other gift items as well as postage money.

Many wonderful cards and letters and photos were sent along with the packages, and I can assure you that you have done a wonderful thing in caring for these children who are orphaned by either the loss of their parents or by circumstance, and we thank you for caring from the bottom of our hearts.
