Church
contributes to cemetery fund
The
Brookfield Unitarian Universalist Church has donated $1,000 to
the Brookfield Cemetery Preservation Fund in memory of Helen and
Harriet Mitchell and in the spirit of community support.
The gift goes toward a $25,000 fund drive launched last May when
an anonymous donor pledged to match that much raised. The money
will be used to carry out projects in the cemetery’s Preservation
and Management Plan, including preservation of the main gate structure
and tree maintenance.
The Brookfield Unitarian Universalist Church is located on Route
148 across from the Brookfield Town Common. The oldest congregation
in the Brookfields, it traces its history back to the original
settlements at Foster Hill in the late 1600s. The church continues
to serve members from several towns in the region and is a fellowship
of truth seekers, bound by no dogma and restricted by no creed.
An integral part of the BUUC fellowship is reaching out to the
larger community. The church does this through volunteer work
with the Southbridge Interfaith Hospitality Network and through
weekly food collections for the Brookfield Food Pantry. The Green
Sanctuary Committee of the BUUC hosts environmental workshops
and is a strong supporter of the Equal Exchange Interfaith Program,
through the sale of organic coffees, teas, and chocolates, and
through its annual fair trade sale of craft, folk art, and textiles
from artisan cooperatives in Guatemala, Mexico, and Ecuador.
