Save
money while giving to food pantry
By
Linda Peirce
Wow, can you believe it’s December already? Where did the
summer go?
This year, we have seen the price of gas go over $3 a gallon,
the cost of home heating fuel skyrocket, the devastation of homes
and loss of family through the 10-plus hurricanes we have had,
and anyone who does grocery shopping knows that it isn’t
getting any cheaper to feed your family. Where does it end?
Businesses
are closing, cost of living increases are almost a thing of the
past, and job security—what is that!
I am a believer! I have always believed that the less you have
the more you give! There is always enough to go around…
The Council on Aging is asking you to remember the Food Pantry
this winter and holiday season. More than ever, the food pantry
is being used and this winter will be no exception. When you are
out shopping for yourself remember to pick up a few items for
the pantry. Big Y has “buy one, get one free” or “buy-one,
get two free” sales often. This is a good way to utilize
your dollars to include the pantry.
A small list of the items that are needed are: canned meats and
tuna, pasta and pasta sauce, hearty soups, peanut butter and jelly,
canned milk, cereal, and laundry detergent. Also, the pantry has
a freezer and accepts donations of meat such as hot dogs and hamburg.
At Wal-Mart, you can purchase a 10-pound bag of chicken legs for
$4.20.
If you want to know what other types of items you can donate,
please call Pinky Walker or Betty Crevier. Pantry hours are Wednesdays
9:30 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 9:30
to 11 a.m.
Remember, some day you may be the one needing a helping hand.
Thank you for your generosity.
