Library crafts programs for kids, adults
By Brenda Metterville

Brenda Metterville

Drop-in Arts and Crafts will continue on Fridays from 3 to 5 p.m. Thank you to local artists who have volunteered to share their talent on a select Friday. Others are welcome to join the fun and share their talent. We have had many donations from our wish list, supplies for projects by local artists will be provided from our storage room. Thanks again for this community’s wonderful generosity. Patrons may enjoy viewing the Abstract Expressionism art created in October, now on display in the Library.

Scrapbook/Photo Album Support Group
Are last year’s holiday photographs (and many more) sitting in the catch all shoebox? Bring an album and the box of photos to organize, we will provide the support, tape, scissors and other fun stuff to get you started on transferring/transforming your photographs to a fun story to present during the holidays! This program, for adults only, will be held Thursday, Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. Please call to sign up; space is limited.

Library closings
The library will be closed Friday, Nov. 11 to observe Veterans Day. Did you know? On Nov. 11, 1918, the armistice between the Allied and Central Powers that halted the fighting in World War I was signed in a railroad car in the forest of Compiégne, France. In the United States, the name Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor those who have served their country in other wars as well. In many places, the 11th day of the 11th month is celebrated by observing a two-minute silence at 11 in the morning, the hour at which the hostilities ceased.

The library also will be closed Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25 for the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be open Saturday, Nov. 26. Enjoy this wonderful holiday, in which traditions and family reunions center around great food!

New to the collection
‘New’ is a misnomer. The book and multimedia collections are constantly under scrutiny to maintain titles from the classics to the popular. Regular visitors notice the constant change and movement of materials. Video and books on cassette overflow are now located in the upstairs Gallery; older “must keep” fiction is also upstairs. Those are the more obvious changes. Through the generosity of your book donations, our non-fiction collection has also gone through a less noticeable change — we discard the old and outdated books and replace with more appropriate materials. Come in and browse the stacks, and see what treasures you can find!

Bannister Book Group
Tuesday, Nov. 29, 7:30 p.m. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
An incredible first book — I recommend this book to everyone. “Powerful, haunting, evocative, riveting and unforgettable and extraordinary” are a few of the descriptive words applied to this fascinating and well written book.

Friends of the Library
The next meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.

Upcoming Events
December events sponsored by the Friends to put on your calendar:
A holiday stress reliever! DansKinetics: Spirit in Motion, led by Deb Kelly-Dominick, certified instructor, will be held at the Library on Thursday, Dec, 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Kripalu DansKinetics is a celebration of life through movement, blending dance, yoga and meditation, allowing short times to follow your own spontaneous creative impulses. The emphasis is on spirit, not steps. Class size is limited to 10; please call the Library to reserve a space.

Santa visits the library during a holiday open house on Sunday, Dec. 11, 1-4 p.m. Children of all ages are welcome to a photograph opportunity with Santa. Enjoy apple cider and listen to Christmas music during this annual social.

Every Friday, the Friends of the Library home deliver library materials to patrons unable to get out. Please call the Library for more information at 508-867-6339.
