The Friends of the Library are preparing for the May Silent Auction. Donations of new or antique items will be accepted until Saturday, April 30. The display will be prepared for bids to open Tuesday, May 3. The final day for bids will be Friday, May 27. Winners will be called by Tuesday, May 31. This is one of the Friends’ most successful and fun events. The funds raised support the Summer Reading Program at the library. Come in and join the fun.

BANISTER BOOK GROUP—On Tuesday, April 26, 7:30 p.m., come discuss Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom. From the author of the phenomenal #1 New York Times bestseller Tuesdays with Morrie, his newest novel explores the unexpected connections of our lives and the idea that heaven is more than a place; it's an answer. As of March 8, Five People You Meet in Heaven has been on the New York Times Bestseller List for 73 weeks.

A description: Eddie is a wounded war veteran, an old man who has lived, in his mind, an uninspired life. His job is fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. On his 83rd birthday, a tragic accident kills him as he tries to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakes in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a destination. It's a place where your life is explained to you by five people, some of whom you knew, others who may have been strangers. One by one, from childhood to soldier to old age, Eddie's five people revisit their connections to him on earth, illuminating the mysteries of his "meaningless" life and revealing the haunting secret behind the eternal question: "Why was I here?"

FOR THE LIBRARY INQUISITIVE, WONDERING WHO, WHAT, WHEN...
State Supreme Court Justice Pliny Merrick, a native son of Brookfield, introduced a collection of 450 volumes and 150 pamphlets and periodicals for the foundation of the Merrick Public Library in 1867. Merrick also donated $10,000 for the interest and pleasure of the citizens, thus becoming the key library founder. A large room was secured in the Brookfield High School on Central Street, where the Fire House is presently located. The first Library Trustees meeting was held in April 1867.

HOME DELIVERY—Please call the library if you would like library materials delivered to your home. This service is available on a temporary or year-round schedule. Friends of the Library deliver and pick up library materials every Friday afternoon.
