GARDENING IN NEW ENGLAND
Keep a gardening journal
By Edna Schron

Hello Gardeners!

Congratulations to all the exhibitors at the Spencer Fair!!

Now that the harvest is here and you know how well your garden has done, it's time to take stock of the gardening year. A journal is a handy thing to keep. It allows you to record your successes and failures, likes and dislikes, weather factors, as well as the type of crops you've planted. I would also include factors that impact your gardening year like time constraints, any pests that caused you grief, plant sales that you enjoyed as well as where you purchased seeds and plants. Throughout the fall harvest, continue to record in your journal. When you begin to plan your 2006 garden, it will be a good source of info.

Plant lettuce in your cold-frame, leaving the top off. Also plant radishes and spinach for fall harvest. Now is also time for fall bulb planting. There are tremendous selections available in tulips, daffodils and any type of bulb imaginable. September is a good month to make your bulb selections, because you can continue planting bulbs until the ground freezes.

Divide your daylilies, peonies and phlox now and transplant delphiniums, forget-me-nots and primroses. It is also the perfect time to take cuttings of your favorite impatiens to bring inside for winter color.

It's not quite time to rest on your laurels! Happy Gardening!
