THE FOLDING CORNER
Folders do double duty in Town Hall
By Philip Peirce

Phil Peirce

A fanfare please, Maestro…ta da! I have a list. Some of my favorite people did a fine job on the folding for the April issue. I had three meetings scheduled that evening, so I left these people on their own, and they did a marvelous job. Paul Berry (welcome, Paul), Isabel Fogwill, Marguerite Desmond, Pauline Merrick, Barbara Clancy, Vern and Margaret Heipler, and Bill Frangiamore did double-duty that evening, as a Special Town Meeting in the Banquet Hall strained to get a quorum. Our hardy helpers dove right in and became the finishing touches on the quorum, all while still doing the newsletter assembly job. When I finally got back to the Town Hall, everything was all done, neatly packaged, and ready for shipment to the Post Office. You all have my sincere gratitude, as always.

Seeds and trees
A.P.P.L.E. Seed, Inc. is the parent organization of the Brookfield Citizen, and although we have accomplished much in these past 10 years, there is still much to be done. I would like to find some way to invigorate this group to perform the types of things that we started out to do: “To make Brookfield a better place to live and grow.” In the past, we have been graced with some fine people who were great with ideas; I am not an “idea” person. I do best at organizing to accomplish the task. But, time and circumstances have reduced our ranks considerably. By the time this issue hits the Post Office, there will be a place in the vestibule of the Town Hall where interested parties could read more about other projects, as well as step up to the plate and offer to help. There will be a sign for both, A.P.P.L.E. Seed and the Brookfield Citizen on one of the magazine racks. Stop by and see if there’s something you’d want to do.

I’d like to ask for donations toward replacement of some of the trees that were planted along the George Washington Memorial Highway a while back. We hope to plant at least three trees this year to replace ones that highlight the entry to our Common from Route 9. Donations can be made out to: A.P.P.L.E. Seed and sent to P.O. Box 411, Brookfield, MA 01506.

Do your civic duty
Don’t forget to get out and vote on Monday and attend and participate in the Annual Town Meeting on Friday, May 6. Please note that the starting time for the Town Meeting is 7 p.m., as there is no Special Town Meeting before the Annual, as there has been in the past.

Call for help
And, another thing; a fellow from Brookfield who was kind enough to call me and offer to help out with the Citizen a month or so ago has not received a return call for only one reason: I lost his cell phone number, and I don’t remember his name. Now, I think it’s getting patently obvious that I’m going to need some real help here pretty soon. So, to that particular fellow, “Would you be so kind as to call me again?”

Fold with us
Join us for the next Folding Party on June 1 in the Town Hall. With any luck, I’ll remember your name long enough to get it into this column.

Just for fun
A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. “But why?” they asked, as they moved off. “Because,” he said, “I can’t stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.”
